Identity Theft by The Washington Post
1. What mistakes did this woman make to have her identity stolen?
• She used her debit card a lot, where credit cards are safer.
2. Why do you feel identity theft is such a common problem these days?
• Because people are careless in what they do and how they give out information. Otherwise, they’re not fully educated in the fact that it could happen to them.
3. What type of documents or personal belongings would someone need to obtain to steal a person’s identity?
• Social Security number, phone number, address, bank statements, debit card number, and name.
4. What are some ideas that you would suggest to someone to protect their identity from being stolen?
• Stop using their debit cards frequently, don’t carry too many credit cards, or other information in your wallet. Use a marker to write a note on the back of your card asking that the merchant request an identification card.
5. Who do you think is to blame: the person stealing the identity or the person who is not protecting themselves from identity theft?
• I think both. Since there are people out there that are desperate for get-rich quick schemes, and since this is the fastest growing crime in the U.S, I can see why. I also think that some people (Not all) are careless and do not go to good measures to protect themselves from fraud.
